Golden Knights-Avalanche game at Lake Tahoe postponed after first period

The game between the Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche at Edgewood Golf Course at Lake Tahoe has been postponed due to ice conditions.

The outdoor contest will continue at 9 p.m. PT.

“We concluded after consulting with our ice makers and both teams that we didn’t think it was safe or appropriate to continue the game at this time,” said commissioner Gary Bettman on the NBC broadcast. “Some of the players wanted to continue playing, others were more concerned. I felt … the most prudent thing to do was discontinue the game right now.”

The game was postponed after the first period with the Avalanche leading 1-0. Avs defenseman Samuel Girard, in his first game since being activated from COVID-19 protocol, opened the scoring at 2:58 of the first period.

Google weather says it’s a beautiful 34-degree day at Lake Tahoe. A blanket of snow covered the trees and surroundings of the rink. However, the sun has reared its ugly head with slushy ice and a slow-moving puck.

“We’ve done over 30 outdoor games,” Bettman said. “This is been the most difficult weather circumstance we’ve ever had, and it’s a beautiful day.”

The Golden Knights were outshot 17-8 in the first period. They will have to kill 3 seconds of a 5-on-3, and 37 seconds of a power play when play resumes.
