Prior to their game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday, the Vegas Golden Knights placed Mark Stone on Injured Reserve.

Stone, 33, left Saturday’s game against the Calgary Flames midway through the third period amid a four-point outing.

When the team took the ice for morning skate on Monday, Stone wasn’t among them. Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy later provided an update on Stone’s injury status.

“He’ll be week-to-week, so he won’t travel this week,” said Cassidy after the team’s morning skate. “We’ll see where he’s at after that.”

Stone is second in the league in scoring with 13 points in six games. He and Eichel are tied for the league lead in power play points with eight. On Monday, Cassidy addressed the difficulties of replacing a player like Stone and how he planned to try

Now, he’s officially on IR. So, what does that mean?

Rule 16.11 of the NHL’s CBA states:

“A Club may place a Player on the Injured Reserve List only if such Player is reasonably expected to be injured, ill or disabled and unable to perform his duties as a hockey Player for a minimum of seven (7) days from the onset of such injury, illness or disability.”

And,

“Once a Player is placed on the Injured Reserve List, the Club may replace said Player on its NHL Active Roster with another Player, and during such period of his designation as an Injured Reserve Player he will not count against the Club’s Active Roster limit…”

This just confirms Cassidy’s statement about Stone not traveling with the team or playing on their upcoming road trip. Now, they’ll have the cap relief for an emergency recall.
