Daily Nuggets: Golden Knights Get Marner; Lose Pietrangelo

Good morning, folks. Slow news day yesterday, huh? I kid, I kid– Monday had it all. The inevitable Vegas Golden Knights turned the hockey world upside down, finally pulling the trigger on a Mitch Marner trade. The Golden Knights are nothing if not entertaining, giving the league a duo to star in the ultimate revenge story. However, the day ended on a somber note, with an all-time great stepping away from hockey to prioritize his health.
Elsewhere in the Daily Nuggets, it seems that no one wants to be a Free Agent. The Florida Panthers re-signed everyone– threepeat, anyone? First-ever Golden Knights draft pick Cody Glass may have found a forever home. The Columbus Blue Jackets massively overpaid Ivan Provorov, and the Edmonton Oilers re-signed Evan Bouchard.
Golden Knights News
Well, folks, it finally happened. After more than a month of feeling each other out, the Golden Knights traded for Mitch Marner.
When the news broke, 31 other fanbases fumed, gnashing their teeth and shaking their fists at the sky. But, come on. Haven’t they realized by now that the Golden Knights get exactly what they want? They’re inevitable, and the house always wins.
When you win, all the noise fades away. After watching Jack Eichel’s success in Vegas, it makes complete sense why Marner chose the Golden Knights. Now, Marner can follow the blueprint. He and Eichel are a duo now, and revenge is a dish best served in the Stanley Cup.
It’s the end of an era. On Monday, Alex Pietrangelo announced that he’d be stepping away from hockey to focus on his health. Neither Pietrangelo nor Kelly McCrimmon used the word ‘retired’ in their statements, but we can read between the lines. Unfortunately, it’s highly unlikely that the 37-year-old could return from an injury like this.

The Athletic ($): With the Florida trio officially staying in Sunrise, it could be a painfully boring first day of Free Agency. Thankfully, there are at least a few depth pieces hitting the market.
New Jersey Hockey Now: Cody Glass, the first-ever Golden Knights’ draft pick, has bounced around over the years. All that changed on Monday when the Devils extended a qualifying offer to the Restricted Free Agent.
New York Islanders Hockey Now: After signing a hefty eight-year deal with the Isles, Alexander Romanov is a very wealthy young man.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Penguins may be the real winners of Free Agency. The market is slim, and every other team is trying to get better. The Penguins have a few interesting pieces they could move, and a desperate team could send them a haul.
