House Always Wins: Inevitable Golden Knights Get Mitch Marner

The golden rule of hockey is as follows: what the Vegas Golden Knights want, the Vegas Golden Knights get. They got Jack Eichel. They got Noah Hanifin and Tomáš Hertl. What, you thought Mitch Marner would be any different?
Ha. The house always wins, folks. And, as always, the Golden Knights are inevitable.
The Golden Knights have been circling the superstar winger for over a year, not unlike a vulture hovering over a dying animal in the Mojave Desert.
The Golden Knights tried to trade for him on at least three separate occasions, the first dating back to last summer. However, they refused to part ways with Shea Theodore; in the end, they didn’t need to.
Finally, the day before Free Agency, they pulled the trigger.
Of course, this is all thanks to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who forced their hand by threatening to file for tampering if the Golden Knights had simply signed Marner on July 1st. But all’s well that ends well. The Golden Knights finally pulled the trigger, acquiring Marner in a sign-and-trade with the Maple Leafs.
On Monday morning, Elliotte Friedman reported that the trade would be completed today. And, as per usual, he was right.
Pending trade call completion, Mitch Marner, signed to an eight-year contract at just $12 million per year, will make his way to Sin City.
The trade has not yet been finalized, but at this point, that’s just a formality. As previously reported, Nic Roy will be the player going back the other way.
Mitch Marner is officially a Golden Knight and will be for the next eight years.
Was there ever any doubt?
