The Vegas Golden Knights are inevitable. If they want a player, you can be sure that they’re going to get him. And now, that player is Mitch Marner.

This saga has been ongoing for a little over a month. It began on May 24th when Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic reported that Marner was interested in signing with the Golden Knights. Since then, the whispers have only grown louder.

Thrice, insiders reported details of different times that the Golden Knights tried to trade for Marner in the past.

On May 30th, Elliotte Friedman reported that the Golden Knights kicked the tires on Marner last summer. However, those talks ended when the Toronto Maple Leafs asked for one of Shea Theodore or William Karlsson.

Those discussions resumed at the 2025 Trade Deadline. Vegas and Toronto included the Carolina Hurricanes in a three-team trade that never crossed the finish line.

Then, on Monday’s episode of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman dubbed the Golden Knights the ‘team to beat’ in the Marner sweepstakes.

“If you ask most people about Marner… rightly or wrongly, they think that Vegas is the team to beat.”

Where there’s this much smoke, there’s usually fire, and this Marner situation is no different. On Saturday, Darren Dreger reported that the Golden Knights were discussing a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs for Marner’s rights.

Elliotte Friedman reported that if the deal crosses the finish line, Nic Roy will be the player– or one of the players– going back the other way.

If the Golden Knights successfully trade for Marner, they can sign him to an eight-year contract, the maximum allowed under the CBA. Even if the deal doesn’t cross the finish line, they can still sign him as soon as July 1st, as Marner is a pending Free Agent. However, in that case, they could only sign him for a maximum of seven years.
