Today, the Washington Capitals announced an extension for goaltender Logan Thompson: six years, with an average annual value of $5.85 million.

“It’s definitely been a long process,” said Thompson on his journey to the NHL. “But I just like to take it day by day. Credit to [the Washington Capitals] organization; they gave me a chance when I really didn’t have an offer, so it started here. I couldn’t be more excited to sign a contract like that with this organization.”

Thompson’s journey to the NHL was unique. In 2012, he was selected by the Brandon Wheat Kings in the 6th round of the WHL draft. Thompson played 122 games for the Wheat Kings, with a record of 63-41-10 and a .905 average save percentage, but he was not selected in the NHL draft.

Typically, when a player goes undrafted, that closes the curtains on their NHL dreams. This was not the case for Logan Thompson.

Thompson was one of five goaltenders who received an invite to the first Golden Knights Development Camp in 2017 but wasn’t offered a contract. After his last year of juniors, Thompson was invited to the Washington Capitals Development Camp in 2018, but this didn’t result in a contract either.

Thompson played just one year of Canadian University hockey. He started 24 games for Brock University, with an 18-6-0 record and a save percentage of .934.

Thompson’s professional career didn’t get off to a promising start. He played six games in the spring of 2019 for the New Jersey Devils ECHL affiliate, the Adirondack Thunder, but was cut from the roster.

Thompson was back in the Washington Capitals organization for the 2019-2020 season. He played 32 games for their ECHL affiliate, the South Carolina Stingrays. He finished the season with a record of 23-8-1 and a .929 save percentage.

That’s when Logan Thompson appeared on the radar for the Vegas Golden Knights. The Golden Knights signed him to a two-way contract in July 2020. That season, Thompson played 23 games for the Henderson Silver Knights and won the Aldege “Baz” Bastian Award as the AHL’s top goaltender after posting a record of 16-6-2 and a .943 save percentage.

That year, Thompson was recalled and made his NHL debut in relief. He played just nine minutes, but stopped both shots he faced. Ten months later, Thompson was back in the NHL, and this time for good.

Thompson went on to play 103 games in a Golden Knights sweater. He had a record of 56-32-11 and a .912 average save percentage. In 2023, Thompson was selected as an All-Star. He won the Stanley Cup with the Golden Knights in 2023, although an injury prevented him from starting a playoff game.

On June 29th, 2024, the Golden Knights traded Thompson to the Washington Capitals for two third-round picks– one in the 2024 NHL draft (used to select Pavel Moysevich) and one in 2025.

“It was tough leaving Vegas,” said Thompson to Mike Vogel. “That’s kind of all I ever knew. That organization gave me my first-ever chance to be in the NHL… It was really scary, asking for a trade and leaving an organization like Vegas… I didn’t know what to expect… I was just really excited and relieved to be coming to an organization that knows me and believes in me.”

Thompson has played 27 games for the Capitals and has a record of 22-2-3 and a .925 average save percentage. He’s one of the best goaltenders in the league this season. His save percentage is second-best among goaltenders who have started at least 20 games. In wins, he’s behind only Connor Hellebuyck of the Winnipeg Jets and Jake Oettinger of the Dallas Stars.

“I’m really happy to be here for many more years to come. I’ve loved my time here, and I’m just thankful for the opportunity that the Capitals gave me.”
