Daily Nuggets: Knights Still Top Pacific; McMeltdown Triggers Automatic Hearing

For the first time this season, the Vegas Golden Knights lose three in a row in regulation. Despite that, the Golden Knights still cling to the top spot in the Pacific Division. Elsewhere in the Daily Nuggets, the Vancouver Canucks continue to dominate the news cycle. There’s an update on the J.T. Miller/Elias Pettersson situation, and some late-game Connor-on-Conor violence will almost certainly lead to two suspensions.
Golden Knights News
Vegas Hockey Now: Players around the league were informed yesterday that escrow payments have been canceled for the remainder of the season. If you don’t understand what escrow is, don’t worry. We’ve got you covered. Here’s a Crash Course.
The Golden Knights announced yesterday that they’re teaming up with Zappos.com for a second annual shoe drive. Fans can donate new or gently used shoes at the team’s practice facility. By submitting their photos on social media, participating fans have a chance to win Golden Knights autographed items. The drive will run from Monday, January 20, to Wednesday, January 29.
For those who weren’t scoreboard-watching, both teams challenging the Golden Knights for first in the Pacific lost last night. The LA Kings crumbled against the Seattle Kraken, and the Edmonton Oilers fell just short of yet another comeback (more on that game later). So, despite their disheartening loss to the Chicago Blackhawks last night, the Golden Knights still cling to first in the Pacific Division.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: I think we’re all getting a little tired of the drama surrounding the Vancouver Canucks, but there’s a new update. On Saturday Night Headlines, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman shared that the Canucks are working to trade J.T. Miller and that he was almost held out of the lineup. Also, Elias Pettersson wants to stay in Vancouver.
In the waning seconds of the Canucks-Oilers game, all hell broke loose. Connor McDavid took retaliation a step too far when he cross-checked Canucks winger Conor Garland in the head. Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers also cross-checked Evan Bouchard. Both received match penalties, which triggered an automatic hearing with the Department of Player Safety. McDavid has been suspended once after an illegal check to the head in 2019. Myers has been suspended twice– once in 2012 and once in 2014– and both suspensions were for three games.
