Daily Nugget: VGK ‘Team to Watch’ Ahead of Trade Deadline; Canucks Star “Easy Guy to Trade”, Oilers Bolster Blue Line

The Golden Knights are in the middle of a skid, and a Pacific Division rival has caught up to them in the standings. However, help could be on the way as the Golden Knights were named one of seven “Teams to Watch” as we approach the impending Trade Deadline. Elsewhere in the Daily Nugget, a veteran offensive defenseman signs with the rival Edmonton Oilers, more Vancouver Canucks drama (when is there not?), and an Eastern Conference netminder scores a goal.
Golden Knights News
With last night’s regulation loss to the Hurricanes, the Golden Knights are now tied with the Edmonton Oilers in the Pacific Division standings. The Golden Knights are 2-1 against the Oilers this year, so they have the tiebreaker. Thus, the Golden Knights still technically have control of the division… for now.
The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler released his annual ranking of the NHL organizations’ prospects pools. Last year, the Golden Knights ranked 23rd. This year, they took one small step for man, one giant leap for all mankind— hear that, Connor Bedard? The moon landing was real!– and improve to 22nd. Baby steps, everyone. Baby steps.
Sportsnet published a list of seven teams to watch in the build-up to the Trade Deadline, and surprise, surprise, the Golden Knights made the list. This year, salary cap won’t be much of an issue, as they’re projected to have around $5 million to play with. However, the Golden Knights don’t have a first-rounder this year and will have to get creative with asset management.
NHL Trade Talks, News & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: The Edmonton Oilers signed a veteran defenseman who hasn’t played in over 400 days. He probably won’t help them much defensively, as he’s mainly known for his offensive production. Welcome back to the NHL, John Klingberg!
The Vancouver Canucks are in total free-fall and are currently outside of the playoffs looking in. Star winger Brock Boeser is a pending UFA and admits he could be an “easy guy to trade.”
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: There were just two games last night. While the Golden Knights tried to mount a comeback in Carolina, a Penguins goaltender made some history in Buffalo. Thanks, NHL scheduling! And congratulations, Alex Nedeljkovic.
